Keep Scotland Beautiful (KSB)

Keep Scotland Beautiful (KSB) is a Scottish charity incorporated as a company limited by guarantee. The charity's name is Environmental Campaigns (Scotland), trading as Keep Scotland Beautiful and the organisation has existed for around 40 years. The objectives of the charity are to 'protect, preserve and enhance the environment in Scotland to the benefit of the public and to educate the public about ways in which this can be achieved'.

KSB is based in Stirling and delivers a number of national programmes about environmental education and sustainable development including:

  • Waste Aware Scotland (WAS)
  • Keep Scotland Tidy
  • Eco-Schools Scotland
  • Climate Challenge Fund (CCF)
  • Sustainable Scotland Network (SSN)

KSB works closely with the Scottish Government, local authorities and communities in promoting its aims and objectives including Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.

The Chartered Institution of Wastes Management (CIWM)

The Chartered Institution of Wastes Management (CIWM), is the professional body which represents over 7,000 waste management professionals - predominantly in the UK but also overseas. The CIWM sets the professional standards for individuals working in the waste management industry and has various grades of membership determined by education, qualification and experience.  The Institute has its Headquarters in Northampton and also operates ten regional Centres. Located throughout England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland, these centres run an active programme of events for local members.

CIWM is dedicated to the protection & enhancement of the environment by the development of scientific, technical and management standards, the implementation of practical competency policies and procedures, and the promotion of the highest professional standards in all sectors of the industry.

Scottish Environmental Services Association (SESA)

The Scottish Environmental Services Association (SESA) is the sectoral trade association for Scotland's managers of waste and secondary resource management. Our Members provide essential waste and secondary resource management services to the public and private sectors. We are working with the Scottish Parliament, the Scottish Government and SEPA to bring about a sustainable system of waste management for Scotland. SESA's Members wish to be enabled to deliver Scotland's compliance with relevant EU law and restore to the productive economy more of the materials and energy contained in waste.

Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA)

SEPA is the public body responsible for environmental protection in Scotland. Its main aim is to:
"provide an efficient and integrated environmental protection system for Scotland that will improve the environment and contribute to the government's goal of sustainable development." In broad terms, SEPA regulates:

  • activities that may pollute water
  • activities that may pollute air
  • storage, transport and disposal of waste
  • keeping and disposal of radioactive materials.

Other principal responsibilities include maintaining a flood warning system, implementing the National Waste Strategy,controlling, with the Health and Safety Executive, the risk of major accidents at industrial sites and operating the Scottish part of the Radioactive Incident Monitoring Network. SEPA also works with many other organisations to help protect and improve the environment.

Caledonian Environment Centre

Launched in 1998, the Caledonian Environment Centre is Scotland's 'Centre of Excellence for Waste Management' positioned within the school of the Built and Natural Environment at Glasgow Caledonian University.

The Centre supports environmental policies in line with the National Waste Strategy for Scotland, waste minimisation initiatives and supporting EU Directives to reduce waste to landfill and establish the waste hierarchy of Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.

LARAC 

LARAC is an organisation for Local Authorities run by people in Local Authorities. It was formed in 1985 to represent the emerging voice of local government recycling officers. Full Membership is open to any local authority within the UK. We represent local authority views in waste and recycling issues, and we are run by an Executive of 20 local authorities waste management officers. We have 396 members from authorities in England, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales "
