Retailers working with Waste Aware

Synopsis:
Retailers have increasingly been working more with the waste management sector to fight the problems of food waste and packaging waste. What still needs to be done and how can we ensure that the public know how to make sensible decisions when it comes to consumer choice. One retailer recently announced that it has achieved zero waste to landfill and a number of others have set a goal to do the same. What steps are retailers taking to achieve this goal?

This presentation will review the technology options and applications for waste and resource management as we move away from incineration and landfill.

Partnership Links
Michael Hogg, Scottish Water (replacing Donald Macbrayne)

Synopsis:
Award winners for their partnership working, Scottish Water will give an update on their working relationship on the Polkemmet project as well as current work with the agriculture sector on the uses for compost and digestate. What the key selling points are for products as well as an understanding of the issues for farmers when using compost and digestate.

The Food We Waste in Scotland

Synopsis:
Scotland has recently published the first detailed study into household food waste in Scotland. It reveals for the first time the true scale of the issue. This workshop will present key findings from the WRAP report and unveil the new campaign strategy being developed by Waste Aware Scotland. It will also discuss ways in which local authorities, community organisations and the waste management industry can support action on food waste.

This session will look at ways that Local Authorities could improve and optimise their recycling performance to achieve their diversion and recycling targets. The session will examine data and information from a number of different areas (e.g. Recycling Centres, Bring Sites, Flatted Properties and Kerbside Recycling Routes) to identify where opportunities may exist for achieving targets.

Securing markets for recyclate

Synopsis:
Scotland already reprocesses 50% of its recyclate but with the exception of electronics the majority of higher value materials, especially paper and plastics are being sent elsewhere. This session with WRAP and Remade will explore material recyclate flows, the impact of the recent price collapse and recovery as well as examining the opportunities for additional higher value recycling in Scotland.
